DEFIANCE, Ohio - After 295 days away from competition, the Defiance College Yellow Jackets women's soccer team returned to the field Thursday afternoon, and with seven fresh faces. The Purple and Gold battled for 90 minutes but came up short in their season and home opener at Winsper-Knobel Memorial Field, falling to the St. Francis Cougars by a 6-0 decision.
In the first half, true freshman goalkeeper Hannah Redick came out with five saves. It wasn't until the 34th minute when the Cougars' Reagan Metel posted the first goal of the season and her first of the game as the freshman was responsible for another pair. Two more scores followed for St. Francis as the first-period clock wound down.
The Cougars rammed in three more goals to close the scoring in the 72nd minute, despite major efforts from the Defiance defenders.
