LIVONIA, Mich. - The Defiance Yellow Jackets were defeated twice by the Madonna Crusaders, 13-4 and 22-6, due to one big inning in each contest in their final road games of the season on Thursday.
Game 1: Madonna 13, Defiance 4
The Yellow Jackets held a lead halfway through the first contest, overcoming a 3-0 deficit with a two-run second inning and two-run fourth. Jacob Hild was able to push a run across on an error with the bases loaded in the second followed by a wild pitch moments later. Hild struck again in the fourth on an RBI single followed by Connor Gephart's go-ahead sacrifice fly. However, Madonna rallied back in the bottom of the inning with a three-run frame, knocking starting pitcher Elisa Marquez out of the contest in the process. The Crusaders clung to a two-run lead until they erupted for seven in the bottom of the sixth to put the game out of reach.
Game 2: Madonna 22, Defiance 6
The Crusaders did most of their damage by scoring 15 runs in the fourth inning. It was a one-run contest with that frame removed. Madonna connected on 11 hits, including five extra-base hits while three Defiance pitchers navigated the inning, who walked four and hit a batter. DC was held to two hits from Alex Rodriguez III and Kolbe VanderLeest, who drove in runs early to create a 2-2 tie in the third.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- The Yellow Jackets finished the year 8-22 on the road this year as they look ahead to their final four games of the 2025 season on their home field.
- Connor Gephart extended his on-base streak to 24 games with a hit in Game 1 but went 0-for-4 in the second contest to bring it to a close. It was the longest on-base streak of the season by a DC hitter.
- Mitchell Roever (2-for-3) and Gunner Gregg (3-for-4) each collected multiple hits in Game 1.
- Kolbe VanderLeest and Alex Rodriguez III each logged hits in each ballgame. Each player went 2-for-5 with an RBI while VanderLeest had a double.
- The Yellow Jackets pounded out 11 base hits despite the score looking one-sided during the first game. Through the first game, Defiance has collected double-digit hits in 5 of 7 games.
