Jackets victorious in debut men's volleyball match
DEFIANCE, Ohio – In its first-ever match as a varsity program, the Defiance Yellow Jackets secured a straight-set win (26-24, 25-22, 25-23) over the Olivet Comets at the Karl H. Weaner Center on Thursday.
The Yellow Jackets (1-0) held a steady lead through the entire first set but never trailed despite three ties. DC had to rally in the second with Olivet leading by three as late as 16-13, but a 6-point rally tipped the scales back to the home squad to help capture a 2-set lead. The Jackets had to rally in the third as well, falling behind 8-6 before taking the lead back on a 4-point burst. The Comets (1-3) played even while trying to force a fourth set, but Defiance closed the match by winning 4 of 5 rallies to clinch the win.
The scoring for the Jackets was spread around on offense with Thaddeus Setla and Philippe Meny leading the charge with 8 kills each. Matthew Shulte added 6 while Kaden Burgeson and Tristan Lazor had 5 kills. Adam Sutton dished out a team-best 28 assists and also added 8 more digs. Oneil Alvarez and Setla led the defense with 9 digs while Lazor assisted on 4 blocks.
As a team, the Yellow Jackets came away with 7 blocks and hit .117 as a unit with 33 kills. DC also had 6 aces spread across 6 players.
