Yellow Jackets bested by Roosevelt
CHICAGO, Ill. - The Defiance Yellow Jackets captured the first set on Friday night but lost the next three to the Roosevelt Lakers in a non-conference affair at the Goodman Center.
Scoring point-for-point through the first set, the Yellow Jackets (1-3, 0-1 WHAC) pulled ahead from a 12-12 tie by winning 5 of 6 points and never relented that lead on the way to a 25-23 victory in the opening set. Roosevelt returned the favor with a close win in the second set, 25-22, that saw the Lakers never lead by more than 4 points aside from a brief 5-point edge late in the set.
The scales tipped Roosevelt's way with a dominant third-set win of 25-15 that saw DC commit 11 errors and hit below 0. The Jackets returned to form in the fourth set but were unable to force an additional frame after losing 25-21.
Matthew Schulte starred for the Jackets with a game-high 17 kills, marking the most kills in a match for DC's inaugural season. Philippe Meny joined him in double figures with 12 kills. Schulte and Oniel Alvarez became DC's first defenders with more than 10 digs in a match with 11 apiece. As a team, Defiance converted 35 percent of their attacks but had 21 errors to drop the team attack percentage to 18.5. Roosevelt enjoyed a clean match by hitting .339 for the night.
