DC loses in straight sets to Lourdes
DEFIANCE, Ohio - In Tuesday night's Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference men's volleyball action, the Defiance Yellow Jackets were defeated 3-0 (25-18, 25-8, 25-18) by the Lourdes Gray Wolves at the Karl H. Weaner Center.
The Yellow Jackets (5-15, 3-10 WHAC) shouldered their second straight loss facing a nationally-ranked opponent with the Gray Wolves (19-3, 13-1 WHAC) sitting 8th in the most recent NAIA poll.
Lourdes came out swinging, racking up 14 kills in the first set and committed just one attack error in the second set to take a commanding 2-0 lead. Defiance was within 2 points the entire first set until Lourdes won 5 of 6 points to jolt ahead 23-17. In the second, the Gray Wolves secured 12 of the first 16 points while making quick work of the set. In the third, Defiance grabbed an early lead thanks to a handful of Lourdes errors but a 5-point rally got the Wolves right. A modest 2-point lead swelled to as many as 5 points at 15-10, 20-15 and 22-17 until Lourdes scored 3 of 4 to close out the night.
Matthew Schulte was DC's top attacker with 7 kills, followed by Thaddeus Setla with 5. Oniel Alvarez and Trent Glass led the defense with 8 and 7 digs. Adam Sutton handed out 16 assists to lead Defiance in passing. The match also featured just 3 total aces with Braydan Ingram getting credit for the lone Defiance service ace of the night.
UP NEXT
The Yellow Jackets will travel to Grand Rapids this weekend and double-up on conference games on Friday and Saturday. DC takes on Aquinas at 7 p.m. on Friday followed by a 2 p.m. match at Cornerstone on Saturday afternoon.
