Jackets face back-to-back losses, including five-set thriller
MISHAWAKA, Ind. - Despite strong team performances, Defiance College was defeated by Grace and Bethel today on the Wiekamp Athletic Center court. The Yellow Jackets faced a 3-1 deficit to the Lancers, while they took the Pilots into a five-set thrilling match ultimately completing Defiance's fourth-straight double header.
Game 1: Defiance 1, Grace 3
(25-22, 22-25, 13-25, 24-26)
The Yellow Jackets came out strong in the opening set, led by the steady play of junior outside hitter Chaney Brodbeck. Defiance tallied nine kills as a team and capitalized on Grace's 10 attack errors to take the first set 25-22.
In the second, the Lancers bounced back behind a more efficient offense, hitting .216 with 13 kills. Despite five kills from Brodbeck and strong defensive work from freshman libero Kylie Yoder, the Yellow Jackets dropped a close 25-22 decision that evened the match at one set apiece.
Grace took control in the third frame with a .440 hitting percentage while holding Defiance to just six kills. The Lancers' offense surged late, leading the Jackets to a 25-13 setback.
The fourth set proved to be the tightest of the match, with Defiance battling point-for-point. Brodbeck and junior outside hitter Shelby Clements kept the offense alive, combining for seven kills, but Grace closed the set 26-24 to secure the 3-1 victory.
Game 2: Defiance 2, Bethel 3
(14-25, 25-11, 27-25, 16-25, 11-15)
The Bethel Pilots controlled the opening set, hitting .304 with 11 kills, while Defiance's attack struggled to find rhythm in a 25-14 loss.
The Yellow Jackets flipped momentum in the second frame, dominating with a .519 hitting percentage behind six kills from junior outside hitter Gabby Rodriguez and five from Clements. The Jackets rolled to a 25-11 win to even the match.
The third set was a nail-biter, with both sides trading points late. Behind timely kills from Rodriguez and Clements, Defiance pulled out a 27-25 victory to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
Bethel answered in the fourth, limiting Defiance to just seven kills. The Pilots' front line took over, forcing the Jackets into errors and evening the match with a 25-16 decision.
In the deciding fifth set, Defiance battled but fell behind early, as Bethel hit .286 with 10 kills. Despite 16 kills from Brodbeck on the match, the Yellow Jackets fell 15-11 as Bethel sealed the 3-2 victory.

Chaney Brodbeck finished the day with 32 kills and 23 digs, recording back-to-back 16-kill performances.

Gabby Rodriguez totaled 19 kills and 25 digs while also contributing eight blocks across the two matches.

Shelby Clements added 15 kills, 27 digs and four service aces combined between Grace and Bethel.

Sophomore setter Haley Hammer guided the offense with 57 assists and 18 digs while also chipping in two service aces. She now averages 5.27 assists per set.

Kylie Yoder had her most productive game of the season as the freshman anchored the back row with 30 digs over the course of the two contests.

The match versus Bethel was Defiance's first five-set match of the season. The team moves to 3-5 on the year.
